How to Apply Press-On Nails on Short Nails (and Make Them Last)

Press-ons are perfect for short nails: you get a finished manicure in 15 minutes and your natural nails stay short underneath. The secret to a set that lasts is all in the prep.

Before you start

  • Choose sizes for every nail first (see our sizing guide) and lay them out in order.
  • Decide between glue (lasts longer, up to about a week or more) and adhesive tabs (gentler, easy to remove, a few days).

Step by step

  1. Wash and dry your hands. Remove any old polish.
  2. Push back cuticles gently. Press-ons lift where they sit on skin.
  3. Lightly buff the shine off your natural nails.
  4. Wipe each nail with an alcohol pad or remover and let it dry.
  5. Apply a thin layer of glue to your nail and the press-on (or stick on a tab).
  6. Place the press-on at the cuticle at a slight angle, then press down towards the tip.
  7. Hold firmly for 20–30 seconds on each nail.
  8. Avoid hot water for the first hour.
Tip: If a press-on sits on the skin at the sides, it will lift. Size down, or file the sides of the press-on slightly.

Removing them gently

Soak your fingers in warm, soapy water (or a little oil) for 10–15 minutes and lift slowly from the side. Never pull or pry. Afterwards, buff away any glue left behind and apply cuticle oil. If you notice irritation from a glue, stop using it.
