On short nails, the shape does most of the work. The right shape makes nails look tidy, stronger and even a little longer. Here’s how the five short-nail shapes compare.
The five shapes
- Square: straight sides and a flat tip. Crisp and modern, best on wider nail beds. Soften the corners slightly so they don’t snag.
- Squoval: square with rounded corners. The strongest everyday shape for short nails and the classic office look.
- Round: follows the shape of your fingertip. Ideal for very short or weak nails; the least likely to break.
- Oval: gently curved to a soft point. Makes fingers look longer, but needs a little free edge.
- Short almond: tapered sides and a soft point. Elegant, but needs 2–3 mm of length and careful filing.
